Suspension Trainers: Core

The suspension trainers absolutely use your core in most of the exercises that you do. That’s what makes them so amazing! But we can specifically target the core as well.

Remember, when we want our core to work well, we must keep our trunk still. The suspension trainers provide a tool for resistance and instability. It’s our job to counter that resistance and keep our body stable.

There are so many core exercises that can be done. You can easily look through Google or Instagram to find videos, especially TRX. I wanted to show you some examples and to make sure you are paying attention to the right aspects of the training.

When you are doing any planks, with your feet in the straps, you can be on your hands or elbows. Keep your body straight. It doesn’t matter if your feet are high or close to the floor, you need to maintain a straight line from ankle to hip to shoulder to ear. Even when you start to move one leg or two, focus on maintaining that alignment. When you move an arm or leg while keeping your alignment with trunk control, you can master the world!

To that point, you will see one of the exercises in the video with me swinging my legs side to side. The important part in this exercise is control. Swinging your legs to one side then pausing in the middle takes work!

Sometimes when we are doing work with unstable objects like BOSU balls, stability balls, or the suspension trainers we can get lost trying to focus on not falling over, and who knows what else. It’s important to remain focused on your core, and doing the exercise well. Can you feel your abs engage? Make sure your lower back isn’t working too hard.

When you focus on your trunk, everything else falls into place. Your hips don’t lie! If you can keep your hips in place you are doing something right. Make that your focus. You will be able to advance your exercises accordingly, as you master the little things.

Enjoy your workouts, add different tools to make things interesting. As long as the equipment has multiple uses and has the ability to use multiple parts of your body, then it’s an outstanding purchase. That’s my rule of thumb!
